Marzamemi, a hamlet of the municipality of Pachino in the province of Syracuse in Sicily, is a village famous for its “Tonnara” (Trap), one of the oldest in Sicily and in fact Marzamemi is said to be as old as its “Tonnara”, founded in 1652. Its history, in fact, is inextricably linked to fishing activity, thanks also to its two small ports: La Fossa and La Balata. Its “Tonnara” is also the largest of the five tuna fisheries from Syracuse to Portopalo di Capo Passero and the only one where the ‘tonnarotti’ (fishermen) were both working and living. The Prince of Villadorata offered them ‘board and lodging’ as compensation for their labours.

Nearby you can visit: the seaside village of Marzamemi , the baroque beauties of Noto, Modica, Scicli, Ragusa Ibla, and the splendid Syracuse where myth, history and art meet.
